Isn’t Yoga for Old People?

GymBuddiez |

AMGT_yoga-for-old_03.03.09.jpg“Isn’t yoga only for old people?”

With those words, my 12-year-old niece came perilously close to being disowned by me.

“Don’t be silly – Auntie Fran’s not old!” This was from my nine-year-old (smarter) niece, who obviously knows how to stay in my good books!

My two nieces were having a weekend sleepover at our house and were going stir-crazy indoors because the weather was not cooperating. We’d already exhausted all possibilities on Saturday night– a fiercely contested “Monopoly” game with my husband, followed by a movie with “loads” of popcorn.

On Sunday, my husband escaped with his brother to watch a hockey game, so that left me with two energetic nieces for the day. After a few hours of making crafts and baking cookies, I told the girls that it was time for me to get my yoga practice in as I’d hadn’t done any the day before. Hence the “yoga for old people” comment from my “live-close-to-the-edge” niece. “Old people” indeed – I’ll show her, I thought. But that thought was rapidly followed by a brilliant idea. Why not get them to try yoga with me?

After a few minutes of the usual protests that I totally ignored (I’m good at that), they sighed and reluctantly agreed to give it a try. (“But if we don’t like it after five minutes, can we do something else?”) So we moved the furniture and I rolled out my mat. “Where are our mats?” they wanted to know. Well, they weren’t using mine (after all, I needed it because I’m old and require more support) so they’d just have to make do.

Ready? I popped my beginner’s yoga DVD into the player and we began.

At first, both girls followed along easily, remarking that “this yoga thing is a piece of cake.” But when we started to do a few of the more challenging poses, they began to realize that it wasn’t as easy as it looked. To give the girls credit, they really focused on trying to do the poses, but I have to admit to a certain uncharitable feeling of satisfaction when my 12-year-old niece fell over while trying to do the tree pose while I managed to hold it perfectly (one of the rare times).

There was a huge sigh of relief when we were finally through but then they surprised me by asking if there were any DVDs or classes on yoga for kids and teenagers. That sent me scurrying to the Internet to come up with some suggestions for them.

Will they pursue this newfound interest in yoga or was that just the exuberance of youth trying something different? We’ll see.

A Painful Few Days

GymBuddiez |

CSM_painful-days_03.02.09.jpgWell, I finally started going to yoga class again and I sure felt the aftershocks of that new beginning!

No kidding, my body made it totally clear to me – especially my shoulders, which is where I’ve been experiencing so much discomfort in the past year from carrying and nursing my son.

It didn’t help that the day after my first class, I had to work with my arms a lot. Then again, maybe it did help because I may not have continued to move my arms as much if I hadn’t needed to. So, come to think of it, that was probably a good thing.

Apart from my arms, my lower back felt a bit achy, as did my hips. In fact, every single part of my body reminded me that I needed to get back to another class – and FAST!

For me, three is always the magical number. I usually need three sessions to allow my own body to make its adjustments and get used to anything new. For some people, it could be six or eight sessions, but for me it’s three.

So, as I go through these next few days, I will continue to do light stretches and rotations to remind my body of the journey it has begun.

My Wonderful New Beginning

GymBuddiez |

Silverlake YogaI have to share with you my experience at Silverlake Yoga.

What a wonderful way to begin my physical practice again.

I chose a beginners’ class with Jonathan Emerson, who is one of the owners of Silverlake Studio, which has been around for 14 years. That is a testament in itself, when a community studio is able to sustain its location and practitioners for so many years.

Upon my introduction, Jonathan immediately asked if I had practiced yoga before, and what issues he should be aware of. He asked me directly first and then, before beginning the class, he asked the group.  Now this is a sign of an instructor who chooses to be conscious of his class.

I have been to so many classes in the past where the instructor has not bothered to ask this of beginning students, which of course is the precursor to higher possibility of injuries.

The participants voiced what they would like to work on and Jonathan took all their requests into consideration while instructing us through a series of asanas that were wonderful.

He took the time to watch over each and every one of us. He assisted us with minor adjustments that made such amazing differences to our asanas. It was truly a “beginners” class. Not for one moment did I feel that anyone was being rushed into following, or having to push themselves to go deeper into a pose that they were not ready for.

All I can say is that this is one of the best classes I have ever participated in and I would highly recommend all beginners who live in the area to check this Studio out. For those who are not able to do so, please be diligent about finding an instructor who can provide you with the necessary support and nurturing, especially if you’re a beginner.

Finding a yoga instructor who is attuned to the needs of his or her class is the best start that you can give yourself as you embark on your rewarding journey of yoga.

fierce-club-logo-sadie-nardiniBringing Fierce Back: Sadie Nardini, spirited yogini, (lucky name huh?) obviously has a lot in common with little Project Runway fashion sprite, Christian Siriano (remember him?) and Ms. Tyra ‘Top Model’ Banks. They’re all fierce! You may know Sadie from her East meets West approach (her flatiron studio) or her Bon Jovi mantra, but now you can just call her President of The Fierce Club, her new studio just opened this week in Soho. The new venture, in cahoots with yoga pal Shannon Connell, features 90-minute power (we said fierce!) Core Strength Vinyasa yoga classes. Bikram is rolling over in his yoga throne. Support the small presses, some of the yogi authors out there might appreciate it. [Art Voice] See more Small Press Month events.

Yoga in Any Language: Teaching Deaf Yoga

GymBuddiez |

You know what? It’s efforts like this that make us such proud little misty-eyed yogadorks. There are certain Yoga Heroes out there who have already helped so many different flavors of yogis: the incarcerated, the homeless, the recovering. If this doesn’t warm the old ticker on this dreary omg-it’s-cold-is-it-almost-spring day then you need to go back to the Wizard cause he gave you a dud.

deafyoga-logoThe Beverly School for the Deaf and the Children’s Center for Communication in Mass. has started offering yoga classes for the first time as part of their physical therapy program. “The kids become more relaxed academically and behaviorally, and it provides a greater focus,” said Executive Director Mark Carlson. The center serves students who are deaf, hard of hearing, nonverbal or have speech difficulties. Huge karma kudos to yoga teacher Nicole Underwood for seeing the sign and initiating the yoga program. Some believe the children are our future.

Also, in further research, did you know about the DeafYoga Foundation? If you were wondering, sanskrit can be translated into sign language. While yoga class for the deaf is surely more visual we can only imagine the practice and vibration of  “Om” resonates just as deeply, if not deeper.

Yoga for everyone!

[Bits of the Day] Belinda Carlisle Restores with Yoga; Bali Yoga Fest Sallies Forth Despite Fatwa

GymBuddiez |

Boy the air seems a little thick with gloom today, eh? let’s see if we can’t cheer us up with some news bits positivity.

belinda-carlisle-dancing-with-the-stars-yogaBelinda Carlisle Go-Go’s to Yoga (heh):  Former Go-Go’s pop star, Belinda Carlisle (remember her? she had some big solo hits in the 80s too) is currently enjoying stress-free prep for Dancing With the Stars thanks to restorative yoga. The rehearsals are grueling – we heard Jewel’s having some knee issues – but 50 year old Belinda knows supta baddha konasana when the cha-cha shoes come off. “I know this wreaks havoc on the body,” says Carlisle. “But I do certain things to take care of myself. I do restorative yoga every day before rehearsals.” We know what you’re thinking, but still no word on her move to host the next hit reality show, yogadawg productions’ Yoga With the Stars.  [E! Online]

bali-yoga-fest-opening-ceremony-09Bali Yoga Festival is Underway!: Remember back in February when the Ulema Council hit Indonesian Muslims with the fatwa stick? And then the people responded with a resounding “meh“? Well, score one more for yoga in Indonesia, “spiritual tourism” wins this round! The Bali Yoga Fest, which had it’s opening day yesterday, is technically adhering to the yoga ban by avoiding the forbidden sin of chanting, while working hard to encourage visits from “spiritual tourists” seeking to practice yoga in its physical form. Wait, what?
The Fest continues through March 10, still time to buy your tickets! [Jakarta Post]

[Blogging Yoga] Who Created the Yoga Mat? And the Yoga Holster?

GymBuddiez |

The word on the yoga blogs…all about keeping ‘things’ in place.

Yoga Mat Sticky Origins: Have you ever wondered who created the yoga mat? Maybe it was while you were hovering face down in plank staring at the pool of sweat gathered below your nose. We sweat on and beat up our mats so much, but do we even know the history of their birth? Shameful. Thankfully Yoga Journal is here to set us straight with the story of how the yoga mat gained traction. Hint: It began with a London yogi in Germany, inspired by Greece. (it was carpet padding!) [Read the rest at Yoga Journal] Also, you can check out a Wall Street Journal review (Yes WSJ) of current yoga mat selection, featuring YD pal LotusPad.

mens-tiger-print-yoga-shorts “Because yoga is not a ball sport”: We know by now that the dude yogawear market is grossly under served, but we also wondered whether or not guys would even want the special attire attention. And then, we were reminded by freebean’s free-swinging interview with a character named YogaBalls on why the right shorts are important for keeping everything in place, and the twists exclusively to the spine, if you know what we mean. Perhaps another type of “prop” is in demand then? We’ll call it the the ‘Yoga Holster’! You business-yogi types can run with that one. You’re welcome.

UPDATE: Graspin’ Aspen Yoga Teacher Scandal, Charges Upgraded: 2 Felony Counts!

GymBuddiez |

gotojail_aumthumbAn update to the Graspin’ Aspen Yoga teacher scandal! Steven Jon Roger was arrested in January on charges of sexual assault alleged by female students at O2 Aspen yoga studio. As you may recall, the accused was originally facing 1 felony count of sexual assault and 4 misdemeanor counts of sexual misconduct. Well, since his arrest, two more women have come forward to report offenses. Yesterday was his big day in court where he faced a grand total of two felony counts of sexual assault, and five misdemeanors, with the maximum sentence still 10+ years in the slammer.

Back in Jan we posed the question to the yogadork gallery…fair or foul? Was this dude just being a concerned “adjuster”? But we have to wonder about his case for innocence, with all these women stepping up to speak out about the gropey guru placing his hands on their lower backs and “[slipping his] hand down the back of the woman’s pants without her consent.”  Whata  creep! Well, he’s out now on $7,500 bond and due back in court April 6. Not teaching yoga we guess.

Now, this is clearly a touchy subject (heh) for the teacher-student relationship. Seriously though, there’s a level of trust involved, especially when it comes to the supposed sanctuary of a yoga class. If a teacher is “adjusting” you and grabbing your ass speak up!

And then what about partner and acro yoga? Where’s the line on the good touch/bad touch? And we’re talking fellow students, not just the teacher. We don’t remember signing the waiver for that.

Watch ‘Sita Sings the Blues’: The Story of Ramayana, As Satirical Animated Musical

GymBuddiez |

sita-sings-the-blues

While we haven’t seen the unmitigated flamboyance of a Bollywood production influence on American film, yet, India’s culture and rich traditions surely have captured many a creative mind, not the least in which amounted to 8 Oscar wins a couple weekends ago. Nina Paley is one such creat-or who was so moved by one of the most culturally profound Indian epics, Ramayana, she decided to re-imagine it as a digitally animated musical, infused with her own comically tragic story of breakup-by-email, against the aural backdrop of Annette Hanshaw’s 20’s jazz stylings. Er, we hear it’s actually quite mesmerizing. And tragic, apparently – the image below was named ‘NinaDanSexless’ by Nina herself.

ninadansexless

The satire made the festival rounds last year, but a proponent of “free culture” Nina Paley decided to follow her gut and allow everyone to enjoy the movie FREE – an idea that is both honorable and perhaps in her best interest considering the story happens to be thousands of years old “public domain” to begin with, and is revered as an integral part of Hindusim. Not to mention India’s latest drive to harness their sacred texts, and save them from pirates.

Oh ok, here’s the important bit…

You can watch the full film right now on thirteen.org

New Yorkers can see it on your big/little screen in your living room on PBS station WNET/NY Channel 13 this Sat March 7

Other folks without NY, tv or the internet have probably already confined themselves to a life of parcheesi and don’t care.

To get more info, view a listing of the oodles of screenings coming up, to host your own, or nag PBS to show it in your area head to the official website.

*thanks to yogadawg for the tip.

What the Great Depression Can Teach Us About Today’s Recession Yoga Boom

GymBuddiez |

great depression jobless men keep goingWhat good is history if we can’t learn from it, right?

Lots of experts, and non-perts, are pontificating on comparisons of today’s financial meltdown to 1930’s Depression Era America. And they’re finding plenty of similarities in the political and financial departments – big banks, bubbles, unemployment, New Deals – but what of the nation’s health?  We’re no historians, but FDR did push for affordable health care in troubled times, as one could say, Pres Obama is shooting for today (in troubled times, arf).  And the people on the ground? According to Mark Adams’ article on the Huffington Post, citizens of the 1930s had a “general disgust with and mistrust of organized medicine and the food industry”, which he posits is pretty much the case today.

Just as organic foods, detox regimens and stress-relief yoga classes have mushroomed in recent years, the 30s were a golden age of preventive medicine through exercise and healthy diet, as well as a willingness to dabble in unorthodox therapies. FDR was no exception; he chose his retreat at Warm Springs, Ga. largely so that he could receive hydropathic treatments on his withered legs.

bernarr-macfadden-as-david-1905Mmhm, interesting. In his case, Adams highlights a pied piper of sorts during the 30’s named Bernarr Macfadden, a fascinating gentleman, and entrepreneurial superstar, who ushered in the concept of physical culture, and consequently a popular publication of the same name. The guy was a health idol, proselytizing many to the benefits of lower-calorie/food intake and maintaining a prudent diet of  just 2 meals a day (the man himself didn’t eat on Mondays). In fact, Macfadden was so fervent about his theories “he cast overeating as an unpatriotic act, and a Spartan diet as the cure for every malady from tuberculosis to cancer.”

Despite 25 percent of Americans being out of work,  the wellness guru’s mag circulation was through the roof, he had his own exercise programs on the radio and his health food was being dished out in restaurants. In essence, Americans were looking for Kool-Aid and they drank it in the form of carrot juice.

‘What’s so bad about the masses eating healthily and getting physically fit,’  you ask? Nothing! Except maybe when it’s a fad. We’re not sure we agree with the 2 meal a day thing, but we’re also not nutritionists, and whatevs, right? The people asked for an alternative and natural route to better lives, something to provide the hope and health to live better days, despite being out of work. Job shmob they said, we want relief and enlightenment (and affordable health care). That is most important.

So, does any of this ring a bell in today’s temperament? A climate of massive job loss, scarce funds, flocking to yoga classes. Has it been a slow climb to a new age of people just trying to get healthier? Or has the surge been a get-fit quick clamoring for relief from the stress of recession? Again, either way can we necessarily say it’s bad?

Turns out once the nation rebounded and penicillin became the panacea of the day, Macfaddan faded. Now if only we could think of one or two guru crusaders today who might be able to fill his shoes…

I’ve NEVER seen muscle growth this FAST…

GymBuddiez |

I just had to let you know about this as soon as possible and I’ll tell you why in a few seconds…

You see, I’ve been doing some research online trying to find something "different" for your muscle-building routine and it seemed like everywhere I went, I kept seeing this weird name, the "Muscle Nerd".

Have you heard of this guy?

You probably have because from what I can tell, he’s EVERYWHERE!

Anyway, I decided to check out his one of his products and I was shocked!

This guy’s amazing!

I mean his concepts for building muscle are first class and he’s known even by some IFBB pro’s who are blown away by some of his training methods.

Well, here’s why I’m telling you about him…

He has a complete program called "Optimum Anabolics" that is the most complete guide to building muscle I’ve ever seen.

His focus?

It’s all about what he calls "hormone triggering" in a way that uses  your body’s NATURAL abilities!

http://optimum.rxsportz.com

Here is just a brief look at what’s covered in Optimum Anabolics…

- A simple technique for working twice as much muscle with each and every repetition without any extra effort!

- Why you should never follow the "lift big to get big" philosophy! (This is going to upset a lot of the so called fitness "experts" out there. But they can’t argue with the logical discovery Jeff covers.)

- How to develop killer biceps that will leave all the ‘wanna-be’s’ at the gym scratching their heads wondering how your arms grew so damn fast.

- The one factor that will help you determine hands-down whether you’ve wasted your precious time in the gym or if you’ve just primed your body for an explosive anabolic surge of massive growth.

-  An unbelievable trick that guarantees you’ll get the most muscle stimulation from every single repetition. (Here’s a hint…it has absolutely nothing to do with technique, but you’ll actually feel the difference after every set.)

…and that is just the tip of the iceberg!

In this step-by-step guide, this "Muscle Nerd" (Jeff is his real name) covers what he calls the "8 Anabolic Factors" which absolutely MUST be addressed if you ever want to put on any significant size.

And he’s right…most programs only cover a FRACTION of what he covers.

But that’s not the best part…

You see, he’s developed a strange training technique that "triggers" a flood of muscle-building hormones without the use of dangerous drugs or even supplements!
I know it sounds too good to be true, but it really is!

I mean, you should see some of the "before and after" pictures on his site!

There’s just too much to tell you, but let me just say that if you’re looking to take your training to the "next level", you MUST get this program!

Do yourself a great favor and go check it out here at:

http://optimum.rxsportz.com

Believe me, you’ll be glad you did! ;-)

Product Review: NaturaPause — The Natural Hormone Solution For Men And Women

GymBuddiez |

by Arthur M.
http://naturapause.rxsportz.com

When most people hear the words "menopause" or "andropause", they immediately think, "middle-age" and "misery". After all, most people experience the onset of the end of their reproductive cycle during middle-age — and this is usually accompanied by emotionally and physically draining symptoms such as hot flashes, low libido, and mood swings.

However, the facts are changing, and they’re changing with the times.

People are now experiencing these symptoms, along with constant fatigue and depression, much earlier in life. Some studies suggest that perimenopause can begin as early as twenty-five in some women. Men in their twenties and thirties regularly experience the symptoms of low libido and erectile dysfunction. Both men and women battle fatigue and depression — often with drugs and dangerous habits.

What is causing this rapid onset of the symptoms of menopause or andropause? Is this ‘really’ what people are experiencing, or it is something altogether different that is "masking" itself as menopause or andropause? What can someone in their early mid-life do about these stressful symptoms? And, what about those who are actually experiencing the onset of the end of reproduction? Are drugs the only alternative? Are they actually safe?

The questions and much more are addressed spectacularly in NaturaPause:  The Natural Hormone Solution For Men And Women.  Created by Naturopathic physician Dr. Holly Lucille and "Fit Over 40" author Jon Benson, NaturaPause uncovers what Dr. Lucille calls "the root causes" behind the symptoms associate with perimenopause, menopause, andropause, rapid weight gain, functional erectile dysfunction and constant fatigue. Rather than addressing the "symptoms", Dr. Lucille and Benson address the "cause", as they enlighten both men and women in methods that can restore hormonal function.

NaturaPause is not a supplement or a drug, but a "how-to" instruction kit comprised of a six audio CDs, a 137-page book and a 28-page workbook.

"Most physicians try to replace hormones. That’s a poor strategy," says Dr. Lucille in Audio 1. "Exactly what ‘hole’ did they fall out of?"  From almost a decade of clinical practice, Dr. Lucille has found solid, natural methods for encouraging bodies to do what they were designed to do:  heal themselves, from the inside-out. This healing process can not only take care of the problem, but also the nasty symptoms — and, unlike drugs (HRT is the common term for hormone therapy via drugs), leave the individual much healthier and more fit than when they began.

"Drugs have their place in hormone help, but they should not be the first choice. The body must be given the chance to heal the root cause of most of the symptoms…and that’s something rarely discussed in traditional medicine," says Dr. Lucille. "For those on HRT, it is even more crucial to address the core issues, otherwise long-term health can definitely be affected."

NaturaPause audios include:  "Hormones 101:  What You Really Need To Know", "Menopause:  Reasons And Remedies For Regaining Your Life," "Andropause:   What Men Need To Know To Restore Vigor", "Exercise and Nutrition:  Secret Weapons In The Battle For Youth", "Restoring Sex Drive:  The Psychology and Physiology of Renewing Your Love Life", and "Putting It All Together:  Dr. Lucille’s 1-2-3 NaturaPause Plan."  Each audio is impressively thorough and conducted in a conversational style between Mr. Benson and Dr. Lucille. Both give their take on the subject; Benson from personal experience of early andropause at 27, and Dr. Lucille from a clinical perspective.

So, what is addressed in the NaturaPause Solution Kit? A small sampling includes…

– Exactly why traditional medicine flat-out fails to wipe out the hellish symptoms of menopause, male menopause, perimenopause, weight gain, and constant fatigue;

– What the natural health industry is missing, and why people are not seeing the rapid results they are looking for by trying what they hear on T.V. or read in a magazine;

– The real, absolute, without-a-doubt cause of nearly all these symptoms and how to get rid of them, make people feel better, and radically boost mental, emotional, and physical health at the same time;

– Why 95% of doctors never treat this hormonally-based cause;

– A top-to-bottom, *treat the cause* Solution that is based in fact and medicine that’s been successful for thousands of years;

– And more than can be covered in this short review.

Dr. Lucille’s book rounds out the package nicely, covering all you need to know about restoring and maintaining hormonal balance in what she calls, "An ever-increasing toxic environment." Dr. Lucille demonstrates how everyday household items are contributing to the increase of estrogen in both males and females. The result:  children are reaching puberty 2.3 years sooner than fifty years ago, and both sexes are experiencing the onset of menopausal symptoms earlier and, often, in increased severity.

5 New Ways to Workout

GymBuddiez |

By: Sean Barker

The idea of these workout tips came to me while watching one of the classic episodes of Seinfeld, "The Bizarro Jerry" episode.

The concept behind this episode was of having a world made up of everyone’s total opposite, which is based on the Bizarro World stories featured in the Superman comic books.

The Bizarro versions of Jerry, George, Kramer and Newman were called Kevin, Gene, Feldman and Vargas.

So if you are not getting results from your workouts, maybe it’s time you do the opposite of what you see most people doing in the gym.

A lot of regular gym goers continue to look the same year after year despite how often they make an appearance and I am sure you don’t want to look like "most" people, as over 60% of people today are obese.

For the first time, the number of overweight individuals around the world rivals the number who are underweight.

In fact a new word – "globesity" has now been coined to reflect the escalation of global obesity and the overweight!

Remember, Albert Einstein once said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".

Think about this quote for a second and ask yourself, does this quote apply to the way I workout?

If so, it’s time to stop being a workout slave to your old school workout routines and time to break away from the crowd by doing the opposite of what they are doing.

The results just might surprise you.

That also includes those people you see in the gym who are there consistently but continue to look the same year after year.

1. Quality, not Quantity- Don’t fall for the cardio confusion where you think the more time you punch on a cardio machine the more fat you burn. You don’t need to spend hours working out everyday to get those rock hard abs or bulging biceps. The key to effective workouts is intensity. With shorter weight training and interval cardio workouts you spend less time working and more time burning fat. High intensity workouts elevate your metabolism up to 36 hours after your workout.

2. Mirror Muscles- Most guys love training the muscles they can see in the mirror like their chest and biceps. But 50% of your muscles are on the back of your body.  Muscles of your upper and lower back, hamstrings and even your triceps on the back of your arm are often neglected in favor of pumping up those mirror muscles. This contributes to overuse and imbalances in the shoulders and spine making you more susceptible to shoulder and back injuries. Do more pulling than pushing when you are in the gym and you will really be glad with what you see in the mirror.

3. Bet on Low- Betting on high might be the smart choice in a game of poker, but for better workouts, go low. Instead of following the classic "3 sets of 10 reps" routine, go bizarro and do the opposite with "10 sets of 3". This will allow you to focus on the performance and quality of your repetitions instead of fatiguing your muscles with higher reps.  Most people train to improve appearance; you should train to improve performance and your appearance will improve as a result.

4. Step Away From the Machine-  You don’t need to workout on expensive equipment that isolates small muscles and put your body in unnatural positions all while you sit down. When you perform an exercise using machines you force your body to follow the range of motion dictated by the machine, when it should be the other way around allowing your body to control your range of motion.  Besides some cable movements. which are actually closer to free weight movements than machines, stick with barbells, dumbbells and bodyweight exercises so you build functional muscles that you can use in the real world.

5. Be Flexible- I am still amazed at how many people still don’t pay proper attention to warming up before their workout and stretching at the end of their workout.  If you want to have healthy joints and pain free flexibility, follow a proper warmup and cooldown.  Get your body primed for training with dynamic movements like bodyweight squats and pushups, then help to lower your heart rate and relax your muscles with some stretches after your workout is over. This is not something that you can afford to ignore if you want a healthy body for many years to come.

Follow these 5 tips in your next workout and if anyone asks you "what your doing?" tell them the opposite!
