Becoming a runner: Music or no music?

GymBuddiez | February 27, 2010
When I first started running five months ago, I could run three blocks at a time before I needed to stop and walk (I'm not kidding). At that point, everything needed to be just right -- shoes laced, sleeves up, hat on, keys tucked into my pocket. And of course, the music had to be blaring. The right kind of music. Loud, thumping, high-energy music.

Make fitness fun (and hands-free!)

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |

Yucycle tricycle for adults and older kids. Is it a tricycle with no handlebars? A unicycle with three wheels? However you describe it, the Yucycle is cool, new and tons of fun to ride. It’s designed for hands-free cruising. You pedal with your feet and steer by making subtle shoulder movements, so your hands are free to hold a cell phone, drink a soda, or shoot hoops if you’re really coordinated. It moves forward and backward, and you can ride it “scoot style” or have a friend hop on the rear step.

Seriously, are you having enough fun?

Jessica Ashley, Shine staff |
Playtime is getting short shrift, and while children might be the ones most obviously suffering the consequences through slashed recess, obesity, and a slavish attention to resume-building activities, adults need to whoop it up, too. Studies have found that a break from work can lead you to take fewer sick days and be more productive and inventive when you're back at your desk. But long weekends and bona fide vacations are like a Nessie spotting for most of us -- incredibly elusive and possibly just a myth. But scientists are saying that like exercise and drinking all those glasses of water a day, we need to find a way to make it happen. And really, I can think of worse prescriptions than, "Go play!"
